What sank the Mary Rose? The story of the Mary Rose was a real disaster for Henry VIII, especially as wooden ships don’t normally sink. This ship was his favourite ship – but just how did it sink? It was built in 1547, and sunk in battle with the French navy; it was recently raised from the seabed in 1982. There are 6 theories to this story THEORY 1 Did the French navy hit the Mary Rose? However there was not any obvious cannonball marks, but there had been some repairs because there was a 5-inch hole in the side the hull. Henry VIII had been fiddling with the boat before it set sale because he wanted it to be the best ship ever. He fitted eight new bronze cannons, which was an extra 8-20 tons. People did not know how to calculate stability so it could have been unstable. Just having extra weight on board alone would not have sunk the ship. THEORY 2 Was the crew really drunk? We found out they had been drinking to celebrate the new ship the crew were really panicking as well because they did not Know how to swim. THEORY 3 The captain had no idea on how to skipper the ship and the ship was badly handled, this was true THEORY 4 Water may have got into the gun flaps because they were left open. For each 1sq metre of water that came through the flaps would equal to 1 ton in weight, this means the ship so it would flood very quickly and possible become unstable. THEORY 5 There was only meant to be 415 men on board, but there turned out to be 715. The calculation is that for every additional 10 men this would equal 1 ton. THEORY 6 A strong gust of wind could of tipped it when the ship was turning, but the most probably explanation is a combination of all of the above theory which resulted in the sinking of the Mary Rose.... Free Essays on Queen Elizabeth 1 Free Essays on Queen Elizabeth 1 Queen Elizabeth 1 Elizabeth I was born on on September 7, 1533 at Greenwich Palace, London, England, an estate of her Father, King Henry VIII. Elizabeth's mother was Henry's second wife, Anne Boleyn. Elizabeth became Queen of England in 1558 and reigned until her death in 1603. Her reign is often called the Golden Age of England or Elizabethan Age because it was a time of great achievement and prosperity. She was known as The Viirgin queen, or Good Queen Bess Elizabeth succeeded in furthering England's interests in the face of foreign threats and religious unrest at home. Highlights of her reign include making the Church of England, the state religion, while avoiding war with the powerful Roman Catholic nations of Europe; the English navy defeated of the Spanish Armada; English merchant ships challenged Spanish preeminence on the high seas; the first settlers were sent to America to open the way for a great colonial empire, and England's economy flourished. The English court became a center for writers, musicians, and scholars. English literature thrived during this period, with Francis Bacon composing his Essays, and William Shakespeare writing his great works of drama and poetry. Elizabeth never married. She entertained both Protestant and Catholic suitors while committing to no one. She used her single status as a policy tool. By entertaining Catholic suitors she kept hostile Catholic monarchs at bay, and English Catholics loyal to her government. At one point it appeared she was interested in one of her subjects, Sir Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. She avoided entering a marriage with Sir Robert because the match lacked any political benefits. Problems at home marked the end of Elizabeth's reign. The Irish rebelled, the Earl of Essex lead a rebellion against the government, and the economy faltered. Elizabeth was the last legitimate decendant of Henry VIII. She was succeeded by James I, son of Mary Queen of Scots and he... Free Essays on Queen Elizabeth 1 What sank the Mary Rose? Global Business . Article Summary Example

Global Business . Article Summary Example Global Business . Article Summary – Article Example The article A new architecture for global financial regulation discusses ways to achieve global growth. The setting of the article takes place at theG20 summit. The diplomats that attended the summit believed that the best way to achieve global growth is through the development of new global regulations for the financial markets. According to the authors of the article the only way to achieve new regulation is by starting from scratch and developing a brand new global architecture for the regulation of finance and banking. The new architecture must include the following three elements: broad representation in the rule-making process, proper monitoring, and systematic enforcement. The current rule making mechanism occurs through a committee called the Basel Committee on Banking Regulation. There are only 13 countries represented by officials in the committee. The members of the committee are easily corrupted and influenced by powerful players in the banking industry, thus real change never occurs. There is resistance to change to any initiative that may hurt the profits of bankers. The rule making process requires greater participation of other countries and diverse stakeholders. There needs to be better monitoring of banks, financial institutions, and of the regulatory bodies in order to ensure the accountability of their actions. During the G20 summit there was a proposal for the establishment of international supervisory colleges for all major cross-border financial institutions. The third element of the plan to create actual change in the system is the creation of a special international judicial institution that will be responsible for enforcing the new rules and regulations.1. What is the reason why change has been so hard to come by in the banking and finance industry?2. Do you think the creation of new architecture for global financial regulation is needed? Why?ReferencesMattli, W., Woods, N. (2008). A new architecture for global financial regulation. F inancial Times.

The Nature of he Hero Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

The Nature of he Hero - Essay Example Homer creates a certain cult of the hero who should be physically strong and heroic. Beowulf possesses similar features depicted as a warrior and fighter. He describes: "My father was known, a noble head-warrior" (Beowulf). In epic, the cult of the hero is established not to benefit the hero but to punish his enemies. There are many unique qualities that make up the hero and the stories have been told time and time again. The hero's moodiness inhibits exploration of human behavior. Some heroes are disobedient fellows who committed a wrong in the past. The most vivid example of an evil hero is Hector who is described as "The Hero-slaughtering Hector!" (Homer). Youth of heroes tells against them-it is part of the theme that heroes have been molded into the settled prejudices of the world. Any attempt to allegories human nature without paying due attention to our sexual responses must appear to be incomplete. It is possible to say that a journey symbolizes important life stages as the p rocess of becoming an 'adult' and new perception of self (in Inferno). A man becomes a hero coming through different stages of moral and physical development. Some heroes show a social fanaticism rather than an actual bravery, for instance Dante in Inferno.

Essay --

What is commonly referred to as Islamic terrorism is based on grievances in the Muslim world that stem from the perception that the United States is only continuing what the "West" has done historically: interfere with and invade Muslim countries. "It isn't McDonalds, it's not bikinis, or our form of government," noted one panelists. The United States needs to focus more on using soft power and repairing its reputation rather than hard military power. It is important to distinguish among different types of terrorists and deal with each kind accordingly. The strategy used against one type might prove to be counterproductive or have the opposite effect on another group. Panelists agreed it is critical to differentiate between tactical/local terrorists and strategic/global ones. Tactical terrorists use violence to achieve a specific political (usually local) goal and are willing to negotiate with their announced enemy. They usually have a political wing along with their military one, which signals that the group can be negotiated with and that it has the potential to transform into a more political and social force. Strategic terrorists in contrast are not too concerned with politics and are instead in a state of perpetual global war against perpetual enemies. They reject all other opinions and believe they have a monopoly on truth. Negotiation with such a group is impossible. The goal of an effective counterterrorism strategy would be to fracture the alliances that global/strategic groups have with local/tactical ones. This could be done by deterring the local/tactical ones from aiding and operating with Al Qaeda types. Making sure the cost of cooperating with Al Qaeda might include the loss of a local group's political objective is... ...with the creation of Resolution 1624 to deal with the incitement of terrorism. So you've got this web, a proliferation of committees on a bureaucratic level to make them look like they're doing something in the Security Council. But really, there's a lot of overlapping mandates. And a lot of people, including the U.S. government, are scratching their head, wondering really how effective all of these new committees can be in dealing with the problem. And to add to that, an executive directorate was created with 20 new experts by the counterterrorism committee, that now goes on site visits all over the world. So they have two components to dealing with terrorism. It's really more focused on capacity building, helping states to get the wherewithal, the means to deal with terrorism, than there is any of these compliance issues, reporting them to the Security Council.

The Fourth Reich

The Fourth Reich The Modern Weimar Republic Foreword In recent old ages there is no denying that the Global Economic Crisis has grown to be a looming issue in our world’s society. The separation of economic categories has become such a job that it non merely drives our political spectrum, but alterations society as a whole. In 2010 Greece was rocked by economic desolation after they joined the Eurozone. Overspending caused monolithic reverberations in the work force doing the youth unemployment rate above 55 % , a crisis that parallels America’s Great Depression. It was shortly after this epidemic that public violences and rebellion erupted in the streets, with citizens and extremists likewise harking for all out revolution. Among the pandemonium, two equaling political groups arose from the ashes of ravaged, modern twenty-four hours, Greece. Representing the extremist left was an anarchist motion with no existent political docket, instead merely an onslaught of public public violences and boisterous devastation. Representing the extremist right, nevertheless is a lifting political force known under the [ now impermanent ] name, Golden Dawn. Similar to most radical groups, Golden Dawn gained its popularity shortly after economic and political prostration. This signifier of extremist overthrow non merely applies to Greece, but it’s normally the manner most Middle Eastern countries operate today. By subverting one oppressive power a much worse power takes its topographic point. [ Ex. Mubarak and the Arab Spring ] Or in layman’s footings, it’s merely by the fires of war and the depredation of depression that people are willing to travel to extremes to happen a remedy ; it is that same sort of despair that caused the Weimar Republic to fall into the custodies of Adolf Hitler. The Munich Putsch In 1923, Germany was devastated by reparations from the pact of Versailles. In kernel, a prohibition of trade and hideous war costs caused the state to travel into economic convulsion. To set this epidemic into position a loaf of staff of life in 1919 had a entire cost of 1 grade ; by 1924 that same loaf of staff of life cost approximately 100 billion Markss. In fact money was so hopelessly devalued that citizens found more usage in utilizing it as kindling than as currency. There is no uncertainty that citizens were angry, revelatory fortunes over the class of merely a few old ages would be dismaying to state the least. Conformity to the current authorities criterion wasn’t an option, solutions had to be created, non ignored. These hideous fortunes would name for a extremist reformation, no affair what the cost. The initial creative activity of the Nazi party was regarded by the Weimar leaders as a terrorist organisation. However, to the German citizens they were revolutionists with solutions. On the fatal dark of November 8Thursday1923, Hitler and a brigade of six 100 ‘Storm Troopers’ invaded Munich in an effort to take over the metropolis. Poorly armed and outmatched, 16 Nazi members were killed and Adolf Hitler was imprisoned. It was shortly after this motion that the Nazi party was banned from the polls indefinitely. — – Similar to the province of Germany in the 1920’s, Greece has been devastated by a Global Economic Crisis. As mentioned before, unemployment is at an all-time high, about dual that of the United States. Rebellions are common, turning more popular with every passing twenty-four hours and the actions of politicians are invariably corrupted, non to advert advancement that is often stonewalled. Resistance of Golden Dawn have late reported a signifier of Judicial lenience, saying that there are legion corrupted functionaries, even within jurisprudence enforcement. It is estimated that over one 100 immigrants to Greece hold gone losing and many suspect that the act is politically motivated. Amid the confusion and curruption, Golden Dawn continued to be the lone option, shortly to make the 3rd most powerful political party in the part. Public credence of a political party wouldn’t needfully be a bad thing, it shows integrity and growing. However the edginess generated about Golden Dawn isn’t based on simple paranoia. The party platform is blatantly clear about the ‘purification of the Grecian race, ’ you don’t have to delve far to bring out that the organisation is structured like a Neo-Nazi, fascist motion. Their symbolism is strikingly similar to the Hakenkreuz, and their gestures of pride parallel that of the ill-famed Nazi salutation. Aside from the fact that they relish in Nazi symbolism, there lies something genuinely terrific, the philosophy itself. Harmonizing to beginnings within Golden Dawn, the journal of Joseph Goebbels, an ill-famed Nazi practician, is used as philosophy. In the 1940’s Goebbels was polar in the Nazi propaganda plan. He was considered so profoundly devoted to the cause of the Aryan race that he finally committed self-destruction and took the life of his six immature kids upon hearing the intelligence of Adolf Hitler’s decease. Because of Goebbels actions many protagonists of Judaic freedom were silenced by Nazi rhetoric. — – The Cult of Personality The Nazi party wouldn’t have been about every bit successful as they were if it hadn’t been for Adolf Hitler. Not merely was he doubtless magnetic, he seemed to be echt about his beliefs. However, it wasn’t merely Hitler who electrified the universe, characters like Mussolini, FDR, and Stalin all played a polar function in reconstituting the universe as we knew it. Queerly, Golden Dawn lacks a magnetic leader like that of the pre-World War two epoch. Nikolaos Michaloliakos, a name seldom heard during the rebellions, started Golden Dawn in the early 70’s. His motive is basically a dominant Grecian race. ( Sound familiar? ) After he tried to catch an indispensable portion of Greece, Michaloiakos was shortly imprisoned for offenses against the state and the slaying of rival party advocator, Pavlos Fysass. Because Michaloiakos remains to be a political mystery, radicalism flickers from reading of Golden Dawn’s already extremist beliefs. It is entirely based on individuality that Golden Dawn remains a popular power. This event parallels something scarily similar that occurred in the Weimar Republic. After the apprehension of Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf was written and released to the populace. Because of its incoherent construction, many persons within the Nazi party interpreted the beliefs for themselves. Unusually, it’s because of individuality and reading that radicalism physiques into something genuinely terrific ; take for illustration the modern terrorist organisation, Anonymous. Insights on Guidance Counseling Essay

It is said that school is second to home, and teachers act as a child’s parent. The role of a teacher therefore is equated to the role of a parent. One of these roles, and perhaps the most complicated one is the role of giving guidance. First, one cannot guide if he is lost. Meaning, inorder for a person to be able to give out guidance to another person, he must first examine himself very well. Because guidance is all about leading someone to the right path. Therefore, if a student is problematic with his studies and is at risk of failing or dropping out, it is the teacher’s primary role to examine the cause – it could possibly be because the teacher is so strict, or could be because the teacher’s main concern is only imparting the subject matter without giving importance to his/her student’s interest. Because sometimes, it could also be that a teacher is the one who is lost. Guidance takes two to tango. It is not one sided. There must be a giver and a taker. The teacher acts as the giver of help, and the problematic person as the taker of the teacher’s advice. This relationship must be seriously attended to by each side until both parties reach the point of stabilization. If ever one of them breaks from this act while in the middle of the process, then guidance is not given at all, there is only waste of time, and the child remain helpless. Teach a man how to fish, and he will live forever. Guidance must not be spoon-feeding. It should not be about being dependent and giving solutions to a man’s problem. Instead, it is about teaching a person how to be independent and strong enough to find solutions to his own problems. Guidance is given so that a person must learn to make his own decisions, his own insights and realizations. And lastly, united we stand, divided we fall -guidance is collaborative. Inorder for guidance to succeed, it needs everyone’s support-both from the school’s community and the child’s community. It needs constant cooperation between the child’s family and the school’s guidance committee which could be composed of the guidance counselor, principal and the teacher. The center of focus is the problematic child. It is like bayanihan, it demands everyones effort to help for it to be successful.

buy custom World Literature (The Art of love) essay

buy custom World Literature (The Art of love) essay It is very essential that individuals learn how to relate with each other particularly in matters regarding love. If at all persons are to live with innermost peace of mind and satisfaction, they have to accept that love does not come as easy as it may seem since hard work has to given priority. Men for instance have to put determination in their attempt to win the love of a woman since it is evident that few will obviously turn them down. Love is a feeling from within while sex is the stolen passion that ladies as well men desire to have since even the most reluctant of all individuals still tends to have a desire for it. This paper aims at analyzing the meaning of love, sex and marriage. It attempts to show the relationship between the three terms with regard to the association between individuals. In a brief overview, the work scrutinizes the end results of love, sex and marriage. The relationship between the three terms is clearly shown by the work in a detailed form. In relation to sex, mens libido is visualized as being milder, as compared to that of the heifer that lows to the bull, or the mare that whinnies at stallions. There are set bounds in a mans sex according to the work since incest for instance is viewed as an abomination that should not even be thought of. This paper gives two main instances of luring a woman and they include making her oyful before attempting anything on her and when she has been miffed by her rivals. Individuals are discouraged from seeing themselves as superior from others since they, like other human beings have their own shortcomings. Love is a well that quenches our lives wholly. It is a necessity to all without which no one reaches the utmost goal of our lives. Our entire lives revolve around satisfying the urge for love. Love is irresistible and it fails not in its pursuits. Men and women who go in search of love in determination in the opposite sex always find it. Sex is a crucial ingredient of love, which becomes a fruit of a satisfying affection, that is built upon true foundations of trust. Its therefore an affair of love that involves sharing of the intimate feelings for one another between a male and a female who are bound together through affection. This aspect is viewed differently among males and females. A full grown love affair brings forth a desire of togetherness that calls for a lasting union of the two lovers. This union is known as marriage. The three aspects inter-relate in such a manner that, when a male and a female get bound together in love , their relationship calls for intimate union based on trust. Love for instance is expressed as a species of warfare; it is very sensitive and apparently requires to be fed thus relaying the message that lovers should at all costs avoid nagging each other. If one aims at making love to endure they should not rely on looks since they turn out to be deceptive. The key to receive love from a woman is to avoid being plain on words and telling the woman what she wants to hear. Courage is an essential trait for those aspiring to love since trials and tribulations are many in love affairs. Sex relates to love in such a way that it steams up passion between two individuals and in the process they end up satisfying their innermost desires. Persons should strive to ensure that they fulfill the desires and passions they have for the other party. A higher sexual drive is experienced in women when compared to men and thus women take the pleasure of being approached by men. Partners should not engage in sex when they are in marriage and neither should they base it as a law. The sole purpose of sex is procreation and the continuity of the human race. True rest for those in a love affair basically comes through marriage. Conditional love should be mindfully avoided by those in marriage so as to give unselfish love. It is indeed evident that a close relationship exists between the terms love, sex an marriage. Love and sex comes at an earlier stage and once courtship sets in between a man and a woman, the eventual action is marriage. Buy custom World Literature (The Art of love) essay

Police Brutality misc3 essays

Police Brutality misc3 essays Racism and police brutality goes hand in hand, and causes a major concern in today's society, in the United States. On March 3, 1991 in California, Rodney King an African American, was pulled over after a high-speed chase, and after stopping was beaten by four white police officers (Worsnop 635). Tracy Brock also an African American was arrested in Manhattan in November of 1986. An officer smashed his head through a plate glass window, when Brock refused to go into the officers lunchroom (Police Brutality and Excessive Force in the New York City Police Department 14). Ki Tae Kim a Korean grocer was assaulted when he was accused of passing a counterfeit bill. He was punched in the face, his head was slammed into the counter, and the officer also subjected him to racial slurs (Police Brutality and Excessive Force in the New York City Police Department 17). Marcos Maldonado a Latino grocer was mistaken for a suspect after an armed robbery to his store. He was handcuffed, thrown to the floor, repeatedly kicked, and beaten with the officers nightstick (Police Brutality and Excessive Force in the New York City Police Department 17). Abner Louima a Haitian immigrant was arrested outside a dance club in Brooklyn, and was brutally assaulted when he arrived at the police station. Volpe a long time police officer was accused of shoving a plunger into Louima's rectum so far that his bladder and intestines were lacerated. Then he shoved the plunger into Louima's mouth and broke his teeth (Steinback 8). These are just a few examples of the people who were affected of police brutality, and racism. There are five stages through which force can progress and lead to brutality: Verbal persuasion, unarmed physical force, force using non-lethal weapons, force using impact weapons and deadly force, which most of the officers mentioned before fell into this stage. The deadly force stage is only to be used only when an officers life or anot...

The Using Perceptual Maps in Marketing Simulation Essay

The Using Perceptual Maps in Marketing Simulation - Essay Example The purpose of the simulation is to construct a perceptual map for a marketing plan of Thorr Motorcycles. During the first round of the simulation the first step was to create a perceptual map of the company to attract customers due to the fact that the firm was facing declining sales from its existing product, the Cruise Thorr. â€Å"A perceptual map is a visual representation of what the customer thinks of a brand† (Using Perceptual Maps in Marketing Simulation, 2013). The student had to choose four parameters among the following nine parameters: lifestyle image, product design and styling, cool, product uniqueness, service offerings, price, engine capacity, safety, quality engineering. The parameters selected were lifestyle image, service offering, price, and quality engineering. According to the simulation the four parameters selected were the fundamental parameters for Cruise Thorr perceptual map. Lifestyle image was chosen because image plays a fundamental and critical r ole in the buying decisions of customers in this industry. Price is a no-brainer because people purchasing any type of product evaluate its price to determine whether the price is justified for the good or service a person is acquiring. The high price Thorr Motorcycles charge for the Cruise Thorr is obtained due to the brand image of the company and the perception of the customers that they are acquiring a superior product than the competition. The use of a branding strategy enables companies to charge a premium for its products or services (Kotler, 2003). Quality engineering was selected on the fact that this parameter is a good indicator of the quality of the product the firm offers. Service offering was chosen because motorcycle enthusiasts are attracted by companies that offer a wide variety of services. During the second round of the simulation the player was faced with the dilemma of the market position of the Cruise Thorr not being able to target customers adequately to achie ve the desired sales output. The simulation gave the option to either reposition the Cruise Thorr or to introduce a new product geared towards the economical market. The idea of introducing a new product to target young customers by making the motorcycle less expensive is a bad strategy that the company should not pursue. The firm since its inception has worked hard to create a brand value and corporate image beyond what anybody in the industry holds. Introducing an economical model is not aligned with the mission of the company and would be counterproductive because it would deteriorate the sales of the Cruise Thorr and anger the customer base of the company. The decision taken was to reposition the Cruise Thorr. The positioning strategy selected was to provide financing options and increase services. Providing financing options increases the potential customer base of the company because it allows people that cannot afford to purchase the bike by paying cash the ability to acquire the motorcycle by virtue of their credit. Increasing services is a smart move because it increases the value of the product for the customers. The simulation forced the player to choose a marketing mix for the new repositioning strategy. The price of the motorcycle was maintained without any changes. Decreasing the price would hurt the profitability of the company, while an increase in price will create customer dissatisfaction. The following three promotional options were selected: organize

Starbucks as an Ideal Employer Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Starbucks as an Ideal Employer - Essay Example The company makes all possible effort to satisfy its employees, irrespective of the fact that either they are part-time employees or are full-time employees. Even at the growth rate of 20 percent per year, the company managed to retain a â€Å"small company atmosphere†, where the top managers used to talk with the store managers on the regular basis so that a feeling of togetherness exists in the organizational culture. Starbucks always maintained high pay scale as compared to the industry standers; also other facilities like health care benefits, not just for the full time employees, but also for the part-time workers; â€Å"work-life balance programs† to provide flexibility in the working hours to suit different requirements of different people; also provided â€Å"working solution† facility for the employees so that they can easily search for childcare or eldercare services.  The main motto of these facilities was to provide assistance to the employees so th at they can work without any hindrance or disturbance.
